LOFTING
Elliott Bay Design Group has been
computer lofting to support construction since the business was
founded. Members of our staff were "pioneers" in the early
development of computer lofting and are true "veterans" of the art.
We have made the mistakes that come with learning (and teaching)
computer lofting. We continue to improve our lofting techniques and
tools, offering shipyards and owners a tested approach that saves
money over traditional techniques and other lofting solutions.
There are two basic approaches to computer
lofting: an integrated approach and an interfaced approach. While
the integrated "shipbuilding" programs in use by some companies may
offer greater efficiencies in modeling and lofting larger vessels,
the efficiencies tend to be reduced on the smaller vessels.
Additionally, the vessel model requires the same proprietary
software to manipulate the resulting file formats.
Elliott Bay Design Group uses interfaced
AutoCAD based software to accomplish the 3-D modeling and computer
parts generation. All of the files that result from our computer
lofting are in a .dwg format and useable by another AutoCAD capable
company.

To provide further benefit to our shipyard
customers, EBDG has Split & Merge capability allowing us to work on
a model simultaneously. Our lofters are also available to help
our shipyard customers set up a ShipConstructor database.
Our work includes the following benefits:

Integrated database to facilitate parts and
assembly tracking. This saves the shipyard money by eliminating
missed parts in nesting and unnecessary duplicate parts.

3-D "Assembly" on the computer before
construction on the building ways. This helps to identify
potential interferences and difficult to fabricate areas before
construction begins.
