analysis projects

The EBDG analysis team has enjoyed working on a large number of exciting projects for customers all over the world.  Over  the past two years we have been expanding our analysis capabilities to include Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).  CFD is an analytical method to resolve problems regarding fluid flow. Our CFD strategy is to expand cutting edge analysis capabilities for front end new-build vessel designs. At EBDG, we kick the "PhD perception" out of the picture and mainstream the technology to the marine services market place.

Sample analysis projects include:

  • Global ferry finite element analysis and model for the new 144-car Washington State Ferry owner's design
  • Multiple finite element analysis projects for SBM-IMODCO
  • Bulbous bow CFD analysis for an offshore operator
  • OSV analytical studies for Edison Chouest Offshore, including specialized structural design and analysis of large support modules used for the delivery of the LANEY CHOUEST suspended between dry docks
  • Global strength Finite Element Analysis and repair design of the 14,000 and 40,000 DWT ton dry docks for Todd Pacific Shipyard
  • Global strength Finite Element Analysis and upgrade design of a 65,000 DWT commercial dry dock for San Francisco Drydock, Inc. for NAVSEA re-certification
  • Forensic dynamic analysis of a floating breakwater in Blaine, Washington
  • Recovery sea-keeping analysis of the ill-fated EHIME MARU fisheries training ship sunk by a Navy submarine, including the coupled mooring response analysis of the shallow to deepwater relocation for Crowley Marine Services
  • Preliminary engine room Finite Element Vibration Analysis for Ocean Design of American Classic Voyages, Coastal Queen class passenger vessels
  • Hydrodynamic analysis, global FEM fatigue analysis, and extensive tank model for the Global Industries SWATH MSV GLOBAL PIONEER

Additionally, over the past eighteen years, EBDG has been providing its clients with a wide-range of analysis services. These include ferry and waterborne transportation studies, operational and capital cost analysis, functional analysis of vessel maintenance and operation, price elasticity analysis, and market research. To support these efforts EBDG has created ShipCalc, a proprietary modeling software which assesses the capital and operational costs of different vessel scenarios identified by service and implementation strategies. Using physics-based design principals to model vessel performance and capacity, we help customers evaluate a variety of marine transportation challenges.

We have applied our skills on a number of projects, including the following:

  • Lynn Canal Access Study for the Alaska Marine Highway System

  • Vessel comparison study for a large offshore service provider operating in the Gulf of Mexico

  • Fleet and vessel evaluation for a Russian shipyard developing a snow crab harvest program using long line pot deployment

  • Market Research Study for the Delaware River & Bay Authority

  • AMHS Crewing Study for the Alaska Department of Transportation

  • AMHS Rate Study for the Alaska Department of Transportation

  • Grays Harbor Ferry Study investigating the feasibility of a ferry system for Grays Harbor, Washington

  • Inter-Island Ferry Authority study looking at the feasibility of an independent ferry operation between Prince of Wales Island and Ketchikan, Alaska (EBDG later designed the vessels currently servicing this system)

  • King County Waterborne Transportation Study examining the current passenger-only ferry operations in Puget Sound

  • Alaska New Mainline Vessel Design Study Report to determine mission requirements, possible vessel types and a procurement plan for a new mainline vessel

  • Fleet-wide ADA Survey for Washington State Ferries

  • Detailed ferry transportation study to accompany the King Cove-Cold Bay, Alaska, Transportation Study prepared for the Aleutians East Borough

  • Analyzed various vessel types and routes as part of a feasibility study for ferry operations for Cook Inlet, Alaska
